Rescue Program

Orange County Animal Services is thrilled to partner with rescue groups to help place homeless shelter pets in loving, forever homes.

Rescue groups are organizations that have united with a life-saving mission and aim to help pets in need at shelters. They rescue pets that may be critically injured, in need of behavioral rehabilitation or are simply overlooked for adoption purposes.

The shelter currently partners with more than 100 rescue groups. Through their tireless efforts, more than 1,500 pets were saved during fiscal year 2022. Many of those pets would not have had a chance to thrive if not for the work of the rescue partners.

"Last Chance Animals" List

"Last Chance Animals" List - Originating in 2016, OCAS has shared the "Last Chance Animals" list, which highlights select dogs at risk for euthanasia, based on medical and/or behavior challenges unable to be successfully managed in the shelter environment. The LCA list communication details the specific timeframes for placement for the pets involved. Animals are not extended past the stated deadline.

Dogs on the "Last Chance Animals" may be eligible for adoption or strictly rescue placement only, depending on their unique circumstance. If interested in assisting a dog eligible for adoption, please visit the shelter to interact and complete the adoption process within the specified timeframe. For dogs limited to rescue placement, the shelter will only discuss placement options directly with rescue organizations.

    Live To Purr Another Day

While we only started our partnership with Live to Purr Another Day less than one month ago, they have been vital in saving the lives of more than a dozen kitties! This rescue focuses mainly on the harder to place kitties such as our senior, young, sick and injured. They have most recently taken in a cat named Lindsey Vonn, who had a left leg and hip fracture. Our veterinarian performed the needed amputation and then the rescue stepped up to help her through the recovery process, and any other medical assistance required before finding her forever home. We truly appreciate all of the help this rescue provides in finding permanent placement for the kitties who would otherwise be overlooked. Please give a round of a paws to Live to Purr Another Day Rescue!
